Are you tired of L&D being seen as a cost center? If you're currently tracking metrics like "people trained" or "courses delivered", you're likely reinforcing that perception. With the tools and knowledge from this session, you will be able to move beyond simple activity tracking to measure the true impact of your programs.

    We will explore:

    • The foundational ROI Methodology and its 5-Level Framework for comprehensive program evaluation.

    • How to proactively integrate data collection into your program design.

This session will empower your small yet mighty L&D team to provide concrete data to high-level stakeholders, earning your spot at the decision-making table. Join us to begin transforming your measurement capabilities!

This is the second installment of a three-part series occurring throughout 2025. You are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions as your schedule permits. Sept 11, 2025

    12 PM - 1 PM – Virtual

Join us virtually on Thursday, September 11 from 12:00 - 1:00 to hear from Mary Rapaport in partnership with ATD Twin Cities! As AI transforms the way we work, it’s also raising the bar for the people doing the work. While tools get smarter, the real competitive advantage lies in building teams that think more strategically, creatively, and innovatively. That doesn’t happen by chance—it’s a leadership responsibility.

This practical, thought-provoking presentation by Mary Rapaport, Chief Xceleration Officer and founder of Xcelerate, explores how AI is accelerating the need for deeper thinking across every level of the organization. It’s easy to focus on tools and efficiency—but if we aren’t intentional, we’ll forget to build the strategic capabilities that matter most.

Mary will show how leaders can shift from reactive problem-solving to forward-focused development—and how to embed strategic thinking into the everyday work of your team. You’ll explore why strategic thinking has quietly eroded over time, how today’s pressures are compounding the problem, and what leaders can do right now to turn the tide. This session is packed with practical, actionable approaches to help leaders strengthen the strategic muscle of their teams—starting now.

    What You'll Walk Away With:

    • A clearer sense of why strategic thinking is a critical business skill—and how it creates long-term value
    • Insight into how AI is creating pressure (and opportunity) to upskill thinking across your organization
    • A look at the hidden causes behind the decline in strategic thinking and how they show up today
    • Practical ways to help your team focus less on firefighting and more on forward-thinking
    • Tools and techniques to embed strategic development into daily work—not just learning sessions
    • Approaches for building a culture that supports strategic insight, better decisions, and bolder ideas.

    About our Presenter:

About Mary Rapaport: Mary Rapaport is the founder of Xcelerate and creator of The Strategic Playground, a hands-on development program designed to sharpen strategic thinking. With over 20 years of experience as a learning strategist and coach, she helps organizations shift from busy to intentional—and from tactical to transformational. No one likes being told what to do…just ask your stakeholders. In today’s workplace, we’re constantly balancing “ask” and “tell” changes. So how do we support the people caught in the middle aka those expected to lead change while also being impacted by it? Join us for a candid conversation about the role of middle managers in change, why they often get stuck, and what we can do to help thaw out the “frozen middle.”

ATD Book Banter Community of Practice - Lean Learning: How to Achieve More by Learning Less

    September 18, 2025

    11:30 AM - 1:00 PM – Virtual

*You do NOT need to read the book to attend. You, your ideas, and your experiences are enough.

What if learning less could actually help us achieve more? Lean Learning: How to Achieve More by Learning Less challenges the traditional “more training, more content, more hours” mindset and instead offers a practical framework for stripping away waste, focusing on what truly matters, and making learning stick. Drawing inspiration from Lean and Agile principles, the book shows how professionals can design smarter learning experiences that drive measurable results without overwhelming learners or organizations.

This book opens a timely conversation about how to create impact in environments of constant change and limited attention. Together, we’ll explore how Lean Learning can help us simplify without sacrificing depth, and reimagine our role as learning leaders who deliver value faster and more effectively. Join us to discuss how to put these principles into practice in your own work.

This program is FREE for all ATD-GTC members. Members may bring one complimentary, registered guest.

How to design Leadership Development programs that create lasting change

    Sept 30, 2025

    9 AM - 10:30 AM – Modernwell

According to various studies, a significant portion of leadership development programs are considered to fail, with estimates ranging from 70% to 80% of programs not achieving their desired outcomes, meaning a large majority of leadership development initiatives are not considered successful. The 3 key reasons come down to lack of measurement, poor design and limited follow-up. Join us as we work through a framework that has consistently proven to have significant ROI for leaders and the culture shift our clients have been striving for. We'll unlock 25 years of experience in program design to help you create investments that pay off.

ATD GTC Fall Event - Learning in Plain Sight: From on-the-job to in-the-job Learning

    October 1, 2025

    8:30 AM - 11:30 AM – Brookview Golden Valley

ANNOUNCING OUR FIRST ANNUAL TALENT DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT!

This milestone event showcases the power of our community and is where thought leaders and L&D professionals at every level come together to connect, learn, and grow.

This summit is your chance to experience why our chapter is the region’s leading community for L&D professionals. Don’t miss the networking event of the season and the opportunity to see firsthand the energy, talent, and ideas that make our chapter the place to be.

Which is why our program zeroes in on one of the biggest questions facing learning and talent development right now.

This Summit features Julie Winkle Giulioni, one of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 speakers and a champion for workplace growth and development.

In a world where time is the ultimate non-renewable resource – and attention is a close second – the traditional model of learning and development is coming under increasing pressure. How can we help busy professionals elevate their skills, build capacity, and future-proof their careers when they have no discretionary time to spare? How can we do it for ourselves? The answer doesn't lie in adding more to already overflowing plates; instead, we must shift our perspective and leverage the learning opportunities that are hidden in plain sight, right within the work.

Distinct from ‘on-the-job learning’ which tends to introduce developmental activities and overlay growth-driving experiences upon an employee’s role, ‘in-the-job learning’ is a strategy that reveals the rich and often untapped educational value of the tasks and challenges employees are already engaged in. Each project deadline, each customer interaction, and every problem solved is chock-full of moments that can catalyze growth and development.

This session, based upon her recent TD Magazine article and work with clients, introduces attendees to the mindset shift from ‘on-the-job’ learning to ‘in-the-job learning’, gives examples of how ‘in-the-job learning’ works, offers hands-on practice with some simple tools including Chat GPT, and provides participants with the opportunity to design impactful ‘in-the-job learning’ experiences for your own organization.

Key takeaways: By the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

    1. Coach those in their organizations to leverage intentional in-the-job learning strategies for meaningful development
    2. Generate tangible and cost-effective strategies for squeezing greater development from any activity
    3. Elevate the outcomes of existing learning solutions by including in-the- job development cueing
    4. Incorporate and leverage AI as an 'in-the-job' development partner to build accountability, awareness, and results.

    Our Presenter:

Julie Winkle Giulioni is a champion for workplace growth and development and helps executives and leaders optimize talent and potential within their organizations. One of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 speakers, she’s the co-author of the international bestseller, Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go, translated into seven languages and in its third edition. She’s also the author of Promotions Are SO Yesterday: Redefine Career Development. Help Employees Thrive, which has been recognized with Nautilus and Axiom Business Book Awards.

Julie is a regular columnist for Training Industry Magazine and SmartBrief and contributes articles on leadership, career development, and workplace trends to numerous publications including Fast Company and The Economist. Additionally, she partners with organizations worldwide offering her expertise in leadership and career development and designing award-winning bespoke development experiences.

ATD Book Banter Community of Practice - Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving

    November 20, 2025

    11:30 AM - 1:00 PM – Virtual

*You do NOT need to read the book to attend. You, your ideas, and your experiences are enough.

What if working harder isn’t the answer? In Do Nothing: How to Break Away from Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving, award-winning journalist Celeste Headlee challenges the toxic hustle mindset that dominates modern workplaces. Drawing on history, social science, and personal stories, she shows how our obsession with busyness leaves us burned out, disconnected, and less effective in the very roles we value most. Instead, she makes a compelling case for reclaiming rest, joy, and human connection as essential to thriving—not just surviving—at work and in life.

As professionals in Talent Development, this conversation hits close to home. We know the pressure to deliver results, drive performance, and model productivity for others. But what if our greatest impact comes not from doing more, but from doing less with greater intention? Join us for this month’s ATD Book Banter to explore Headlee’s provocative ideas and discuss how “doing nothing” might unlock healthier teams, stronger engagement, and more meaningful growth.
