How Story Works: The Power of Story to Inspire Learning

Presenter: Tim Schuster, Pop-Up Think Tank!

Date: Thursday, September 15th

Time: 9:45AM - 12PM

Location: In-Person @ Brookview Golden Valley

Stop! Before designing a learning experience, creating an invitation, or even scribbling down a meeting agenda, we’re all better off knowing how story works.

It’s a complex and noisy world. This workshop unpacks the 7 essential story elements - and then gives you 4 immediate applications. You’ll leave the session with new frameworks
and tools. And there is a good chance you’ll never experience a commercial, news article, movie, or theatre production the same way.

Gain an accessible & practical overview of narrative architecture – the underlying forces that drive effective communication and experience design. Explore endless applications to leading, communicating, and living.

A session for trainers & coaches, communicators, innovation leaders, & change management experts who use words & images daily to convey ideas, explain processes, and communicate for change. Learn how to cut through the noise so you can bring your audience deeper into a story that resonates.

Be Less Human to Improve Your Learning & Development Programs

Presenter: Howie Milstein

Date: Tuesday, October 11th

Time: 8:45am-12pm

Location: In-Person @  Brookview Golden Valley

316 Brookview Parkway S, Golden Valley, MN 55426

The issue with developing people is that (unless you train animals) your audience includes, well…people!  And to further complicate things, YOU, the person designing, developing or delivering the experience is also (most likely) also a human!

In this interactive session, Howie Milstein, Annoyance and Provocateur with The Institute to Stop Taking Yourself So Seriously, will help instructional designers, trainers, coaches and anyone who works to develop people, recognize key issues to watch out for when designing, developing or delivering learning and development experiences.

Session attendees will:

  • Recognize how biases, insecurities and other natural instincts can unconsciously hijack our best intentions, getting in the way of creating a positive growth and learning experiences for others.
  • Learn how to avoid creating conditions that unintentionally alienate or discourage learners.

Meet the Presenter:

A strong adherent to the ideas of Self Determination Theory, including the principles of autonomy, mastery and purpose, Howie Milstein learned that acquiring an understanding of motivation was only half the battle. In order to optimize culture, employee engagement, and predictable outcomes, he had to become deeply introspective and choose the best leadership style to nurture innovation, passion and growth. When he stopped taking himself so seriously, things got better. Much better.

As the CEO/Provocateur with the Institute to Stop Taking Yourself So Seriously!, Howie’s message is that, while there are myriad options to attempt cultural change in organizations, perhaps the only thing is for individuals to seriously manage their egos. Jobs and careers aren’t just for economic sustenance, rather they are a means to access and contribute to healthy communities where individuals are emotionally bolstered, challenged, and valued.

Integrating SERIOUS PLAY into your Learning and Coaching Experiences

Presenter: Laura Delavie

Date: Tuesday, October 25th

Time: 8:45am-12pm

Location: In-Person @ Brookview Golden Valley,

316 Brookview Parkway S., Golden Valley, MN 55426

LEGO SERIOUS PLAY (LSP) is an engaging and intuitively appealing way to help organizations and teams find answers to their own challenges and options. LSP is a facilitated process that leads participants through a series of deeper prompts to address challenges. Participants build three-dimensional models using special LEGO bricks in response to prompts that we customize for each group's area of focus.

This workshop will creatively engage participants to re-energize their own joy of learning and help them explore how to improve the work they do with their clients, partners, and stakeholders.

Session attendees will:

  • Engage the whole-brain through use of both the right and left hands while building models
  • Integrate social, cognitive, and emotional dimensions into group exercises
  • Share new ideas and think differently about their challenges and opportunities
  • Explore, realize, and articulate a much more detailed view of their world

Meet the Presenter:

Regardless of the overarching challenge or goal, Laura Delavie helps people shift their beliefs, mindsets, and behaviors for positive change. As the Chief Alchemist of ALCEMIS, she designs and facilitates engaging and actionable experiences like conversations, workshops, coaching engagements, and communications for leaders and teams who want to identify insights, resolve differences, create shared meaning and alignment, strategize and plan, unleash collaboration, and generate new solutions to have a positive impact. Her work integrates methodologies like LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®, 3D Creative Solution Design™, and/or Integral Coaching® to catalyze and help leaders and teams think and act differently.
