ATD-GTC Change Leadership Community of Practice

Belonging Cues, Vulnerability, and Trust in Times of Change

Building trust and establishing belonging cues in times of disruptive change can seem like a daunting task, yet is essential in supporting the people side of change. In this virtual and interactive session, we’ll explore the concepts of belonging cues and vulnerability, and will practice ways to intentionally build both in times of disruption and change. We’ll also touch briefly on how self-awareness plays a critical role in how trust is built, and how it encourages and supports authentic and meaningful connection.

  • What are “belonging cues?” What are some examples?
  • Why are they important? What happens when they are absent?
  • How can leaders create and send belonging cues in times of change? How can they reinforce existing belonging cues in support of their teams?
  • How can leaders cultivate awareness of cues that signal distress or anxiety from their employees and take action?

In small breakout groups, we'll practice scenarios where we’ll identify belonging cues, as well as how to notice/create them when they are absent. Come prepared to discuss and delve deeper into this important topic - we’ll see you there!

This peer learning event is led by Kristina Ralston who currently serves as the Organizational Change Lead for the Ramsey County Enterprise Project Management Office.
